SCENIC SUV EXCURSION TO
CODY MEADOWS THROUGH THE HIGH SIERRA

Saturday, July 17, 2004

PLACERVILLE (May 21, 2004) – Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and other four-wheel drive owners are invited to join the Capital City Mountain Goats Four-Wheel Drive Club on its annual Cody Meadows adventure through the high Sierra on Saturday, July 17.

According to Dennis Bartholomew, one of the event organizers, this is a scenic, historic and narrated trip that begins in Placerville and takes guests to the "Devil’s Garden," followed by a scenic overlook of Cody Lake, Horseshoe Falls, Strawberry Canyon, Kirkwood Meadows Ski Resort and Caples Lake.

In addition, Bartholomew said participants would visit an old line-cabin still in use today by cowboys who drive cattle from the high country.

"This trip is truly family oriented and affords an opportunity for some mild four-wheeling and learning about the early pioneers who settled in this region," Bartholomew said.

"Not only do the ‘Goats’ plan and guide their guests to these hidden historical and scenic sites," said Bartholomew, "but they also provide a level of catering and amenities which most SUV families have really come to appreciate and value." He explained that a barbeque trailer will accompany the trek so that club members can prepare a hot lunch for their guests that features a choice of steak or chicken sandwiches together with homemade potato salad, chips, dessert and soft drinks – all served from gaily decorated tables in the serenity and beauty of the backcountry forest. Trail snacks, soft drinks and water will also be available at scheduled stops.

Bartholomew said the club historian has prepared a booklet for each family that contains a description of the area visited, together with early photographs, maps and other historical information. In addition, a complimentary copy of Mark Smith’s "Guide to Safe, Common Sense Off-Road Driving" and a dash plaque will be given to each family.

Now, as if all this wasn’t enough for their guests, the ‘Goats’ have topped off their SUV run by offering all participants the luxury of a traveling "Comfort Station." A clean luxurious portable outhouse accompanies all of the club’s SUV trips.

Cost for the one-day family excursion to Cody Meadows is $55 per adult; $10 for children ages seven through 17 and children under seven years of age are welcome free of charge. Cost includes all food, brochures, books, snacks, and dash plaque.

The Cody Meadows trip will depart Placerville at approximately 9 a.m. and guests can expect to be back on Highway 50 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The trip is limited to the first 20 vehicles registered.
