SUV OWNERS INVITED TO TOUR CALIFORNIA’S
SCENIC AND HISTORICAL LOST COAST

Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15

EUREKA, CA (April 17, 2003) – Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and other four-wheel drive owners are invited to attend the 4th annual Lost Coast Scenic and Historical Tour in northern Mendocino and southern Humboldt Counties, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, hosted by the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs.

According to Dave Wheeler, trail boss and narrator for the tour, this popular trek will require some mild four-wheeling in the beautiful backcountry of California’s northern coast. During the three-day adventure, participants will drive approximately 180 miles over backcountry roads and trails from the seashore to the giant Redwoods and from the Mattole River Valley to the King Range.

"We have designed what we believe will be an exciting, scenic, and historical family trip in some of the most beautiful areas of the state," said Wheeler. "Additionally, again this year we are fortunate to have Jim and Shirley Bramham as our trail chefs, known throughout the four-wheel drive community for their great cooking."

Wheeler explained that this year’s tour would begin a 8 a.m. on Friday morning with registration and a continental breakfast at Shelter Cove, located near the south end of the King Range National Conservation Area. He said that participants would camp at Shelter Cove each evening with different day trips planned from the Shelter Cove staging area.

On Friday, Wheeler said he would lead the group north along the King Mountain Range to the town of Petrolia, site of the first oil discovery in California. From Petrolia, the contingent will proceed through the Mattole River Valley to the mouth of the Mattole River, where guests may spot some migrating California gray whales.

Saturday’s trip will be inland and include stops in the Redwoods at the Avenue of the Giants; a short, level hike along paths in the Redwoods and a trip to the Rockefeller Forest, home of the Founder’s Grove and Flat Iron Tree. On Sunday, the final day of the trip, the group will have an opportunity to put their vehicles in four-wheel drive going south to Ursal Beach. Wheeler said it is possible that the guests might see some grazing Roosevelt Elk along this route. The Lost Coast Trip will end in the town of Rockport on Highway 1.

Cost for the Lost Coast Scenic and Historical Tour is $200 for adults, which includes all meals and camping fees at Shelter Cove for those tent camping. Motor homes, recreational vehicles and trailers are welcome; however, there will be an additional charge. Cost for children ages six through 12 is $100 and children under six are welcome free of charge.

Wheeler said that camping equipment including tents and sleeping bags are required and he also highly recommends participants bring a citizens band (CB) radio, binoculars, camera and folding chairs.
