FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUV ADVENTURE RETRACES MORMON PIONEERS’
TREK THROUGH THE SIERRA NEVADA IN 1848
SACRAMENTO
(June 14, 2005) - - The Capital City Mountain Goat 4X4 Club will host a
historical and scenic four-wheel drive adventure on Saturday, June 25, retracing
the 1848 Mormon pioneers’ route through the Sierras.
According to Rob Irvine, one of the event organizers, this fully-narrated trip beginning in Placerville is family-oriented and is designed for sport utility and other four-wheel drive vehicles with low range. Irvine said some mild four-wheeling would be required.
"We will be taking our guests on the Mormon Emigrant Trail that was used by the Mormon pioneers when their church called them back to the Salt Lake Valley from California," said Irvine. "It is a very scenic trip and participants will be afforded an opportunity to learn from Mormon diaries and visit locations where there are still visible ruts left by their wagon wheels and explore their old campsites."
The first stop on the tour will be the Vista Shot overlook for a restroom break and air down the tires. From Vista Shot, the group will pick up the Mormon Emigrant Trail above Silver Lake and then proceed to Mud Lake. A stop will be made at the grave of George Cottonwood, pass the Kit Carson tree and stop at the Allen Ranch log cabin for lunch.
After lunch, the contingent will proceed along a trail up to Squaw Ridge to the Plasse Trading Post site located approximately 8,600 feet above sea level. The return trip will include stops at the Silver Lake overlook, with Silver Lake and Thunder Mountain in the background.
Cost for this enjoyable one-day trip is $45 per adult; $15 for children age six through 15 and children five and under are welcome free of charge. The registration fee includes lunch, soft drinks, historical information and maps, a dash plaque and a copy of "Guide to Safe, Common Sense Off Road Driving," written by Mark Smith.
Participants should plan to meet at the Grocery Outlet parking lot in Placerville for registration at 7 a.m. From Sacramento or the Bay Area, take Hwy 50 east to Placerville and exit Schnell School Road. Take a left on Broadway to proceed to the Grocery Outlet parking lot located across the street from the Waffle House coffee shop. The group will depart Placerville at 8 a.m.
To register for the Mormon Emigrant Trail Ride or for more information, contact Rob Irvine at (916) 334-8053 or rirvineloans@yahoo.com or visit the club’s website at www.capitalcitygoat.org .
