FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA 4X4 "HANDS-ON" SAFETY CLINIC
TEACHES SUV OWNERS HOW TO PROPERLY DRIVE OFF ROAD

Saturday, April 9 or Sunday, April 10, 2005
Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area near Folsom

FOLSOM (Jan. 29, 2005) – Thousands of northern Californians are buying into the popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) market; however, the majority of those owners are not confident that they are ready to take their vehicle off road into the backcountry.

To assist SUV and other four-wheel drive owners, the Sacramento-based Capital City Mountain Goat Four Wheel Drive Club will conduct its next 4X4 "hands-on" safety clinic on Saturday, Apr. 9 or Sunday, Apr. 10 at the Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), located approximately 20 miles east of Sacramento.

According to Tex Texiera, one of the instructors at the clinic, students may choose either day for attendance. Classes begin each morning at 8 a.m.

The clinic begins with 1 ½ hours of classroom instruction, followed by four hours of memorable hands-on driving, where students will encounter many simulated obstacles similar to those they will find in the backcountry. Students will learn how to "walk" their vehicle, drive over trails and big rocks, and how to use a tow strap for helping anyone who gets stuck in the mud or snow.

"With so many people wanting to get off the highway and visit their favorite fishing hole or just get away from the big city life, we offer a clinic for a different kind of driving that opens up a whole new world for exploration and adventure," said Texiera, who has taught hundreds of students over the past several years.

"There is no auto club towing or emergency road service for off-highway vehicle drivers, so we teach common sense and build your confidence for virtually every situation you might encounter while driving off road," he said.

Texiera explained that the clinic also teaches students about the importance of obeying the rules and environmental concerns in the backcountry. Students will continually hear instructors talk about treading lightly, not disturbing wildlife and staying on designated roads and trails.

Cost for the one-day course is $55 for the student-driver and $5 for each ride-along passenger. For those choosing to pay at the clinic, the cost is $60.

The Prairie City SVRA is located off Highway 50 just east of Folsom. Students should exit the Prairie City Road and continue to White Rock Road. At the junction, take a right on White Rock Road and watch on the left hand side of the road for signs leading you into the off road park. Classroom instruction will be conducted at the Prairie City headquarters.
