FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

4X4 ASSOCIATION’S 37TH ANNUAL SIERRA TREK
ADDS NEW SCENIC AND HISTORICAL SUV TOURS
SUV Trips Scheduled for Aug. 7 and Aug. 9

TRUCKEE, CA (June 9, 2003) – Adding to an already full slate of interesting sport utility vehicle (SUV) trips, the California Association of 4-Wheel Drive Clubs has announced the addition of two additional scenic and historical trips during its upcoming 37th annual Sierra Trek, Thursday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 10, at Meadow Lake north of Truckee.

According to Carrol Bryant, chairman for this year’s event, there will be a new Bear Valley Historical Trail trip on Saturday, Aug. 9 designed for four-wheel drive owners with intermediate skills. This trip is limited to 100 vehicles. Cost is $100 per adult, $35 for children 7-12 years and children under 7 are free. The cost includes all meals from Saturday trail breakfast through Sunday breakfast and one dash plaque.

Also added this year is another Saturday SUV tour entitled "The History of Transportation into and out of California 1841 to 1927." Trail boss and narrator Warner Anderson said this tour would accept beginning four-wheelers and veterans for a trip along the Henness Pass to Dog Valley. At Dog Valley, there will be a short hike along the pristine California Trail. This trip is limited to 25 vehicles. Cost is the same as the Bear Valley trip.

Other backcountry SUV trips returning this year includes the exciting Blackwood Canyon scenic tour near Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Aug. 7 and the historic Summit City SUV tour on Saturday, Aug. 9.

The Aug. 7 Blackwood Canyon trip will take participants from the Donner Memorial to the Blackwood Canyon and from Ellis Peak to the Barker Pass and finally to the end of the Rubicon Trail. This trip is limited to 25 vehicles and open to all four-wheel drive vehicles. Cost is $135 per adult; $35 for children 7-12 and children under 7 are welcome free of charge.

Also on Sat., Aug. 9, the association will offer a scenic and historical SUV tour around Meadow Lake to include stops at the old Summit City cemetery, the top of the Sierra Divide, and portions of the famous Henness Pass Road. Cost for this trip is $110 per adult, $35 for children 7-12 and children seven and under are free.

Bryant said that regardless of the trip selected, all vehicles must have four-wheel drive with low range.

Sierra Trek, the largest all-volunteer four-wheel drive event in the United States, annually attracts approximately 1,500 participants and hundreds of vehicles from throughout the West. In addition to the various SUV trips, Sierra Trek also offers challenging four-wheel drive opportunities on the difficult Fordyce Creek Trail from Thursday, Aug. 7 through Saturday, Aug. 9.

The Sierra Trek base camp at Meadow Lake offers ample space for tent camping, recreational vehicles and camping trailers. All camping fees and meals are included in the price to the selected four-wheel drive trip.

Bryant said Sierra Trek is a family-oriented event and offers many activities in camp for children and adults. Adults will be offered dancing Friday and Saturday nights to a live band plus Karaoke and off-road videos. In addition, there will be horse shoe tournaments, tug-o-war and four-wheel drive manufacturers display.

For the children, Trek offers carnival games, arts and crafts, a visit from Smokey Bear, water games, fishing at Meadow Lake and a book exchange.
