SUV OWNERS INVITED TO REVISIT YESTERYEAR
ON THE SLATE MOUNTAIN TRAIL

El Dorado Forest Trail Ride
Scheduled for Saturday, October 16

PLACERVILLE (Aug. 16, 2004)Sport utility vehicle (SUV) and other four-wheel drive owners are invited to join the Capital City Mountain Goats Four-Wheel Drive Club on their annual Slate Mountain Trail adventure through the El Dorado National Forest on Saturday, Oct. 16.

According to Dennis Bartholomew, one of the event organizers, this is a scenic, historic and narrated trip between Placerville and Georgetown. Bartholomew said participants would have an opportunity to cross an old one-lane suspension bridge over the beautiful Mosquito Canyon and visit an old forestry lookout station atop Slate Mountain.

In addition guests will see and explore the ruins of a 1920’s six-story hotel completely hidden in the forest overgrowth and visit an early railroad line where logging efforts took timber to the many mines in the area.

"This trip is really family oriented and affords an opportunity for some mild four-wheeling and learning about the early pioneers who settled in this region," Bartholomew said. "It truly will provide families with a better appreciation of what pioneer life was like from the 1850’s to the early 1900’s and discover a network of four-wheel drive trails throughout the forest."

The roundtrip excursion will be approximately 120 miles and take between seven and eight hours. Bartholomew explained that any four-wheel drive vehicle with low range could easily make the trip.

Cost for the Slate Mountain Trail trip is $55 for adults 17 and over; $10 for children seven years of age through 17 and children six and under are welcome free of charge.

The trip price includes a gourmet hot lunch, a historical booklet on the trip, trail snacks, soft drinks, traveling outhouse trailer and dash plaque for each vehicle.

Participants will meet at Denny’s Restaurant located at 99 Fairlane Rd. in Placerville between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Guests should exit Forni Rd. off Highway 50 east. The excursion will begin at 9 a.m.

To register for this exciting adventure in the El Dorado National Forest or for more information, contact Dennis Bartholomew at (916) 421-7788 or email dbbart@earthlink.net.
