BACKCOUNTRY SUV TRIP IN THE SIERRA TO SEARCH FOR
FALL COLORS AND VISIT HISTORIC MINING TOWNS

Saturday, October 13, 2007

SACRAMENTO (Sept. 22, 2007) – Women Out Wheeling (WOW), a member club of the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, has announced that it will host a historical and narrated four-wheel drive trip in the Sierra backcountry on Saturday, Oct. 13. This adventure is well-suited for stock sport utility vehicles (SUV) as well as other vehicles with four-wheel drive and low range.

According to Claudia Smith, one of the event organizers, this trip will begin in historic Colfax and take participants up You Bet Road in Nevada Country, where they will observe several mining districts and abandoned mining sites.

"In addition to visiting the hydraulic mining sites, we will also be searching for fall colors along the supply routes that were used by the early 49ers," said Smith. "We will have lunch at an old hotel in the town of Washington along the banks of the Yuba River, where our trail boss, Jim Bramham, will provide information about the Donner Party plus much more lore about the old west."

Participants are encouraged to bring a citizens band (CB) or family channel radio, as Bramham will narrate much of the trip from his vehicle. Guests on the trip should also consider bringing cold drinks, a camera, and suntan lotion.

Cost for this exciting off-road trek is $50 for adults; children 8-15 is $25, and children under the age of eight are welcome free of charge. Cost includes a continental breakfast at the staging area in Colfax and lunch at the Washington Hotel.

Participants will gather in downtown Colfax, 1 Main Street (Historical Railroad Station) on Saturday morning between 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. for registration and a light breakfast. The trip will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the group is expected back in Grass Valley at approximately 4:30 p.m.

"We want to ensure that all the lady drivers know that they are welcome to join us on this trip along with the guy drivers," Smith said.

Proceeds from this event will go to the Sacramento-based Easter Basket Project for disadvantaged youth in the area.
