Subject: Tahoe Forest issue

Rick I wanted to bring to your attention a issue on the Tahoe forest of a trail that they are talking about closing. the trails is the trail from Rattlesnake road over to the Fordyce trail.  It is really the east side of the signal peak trail.  The number is 13E59.  If you look at the map they are talking about leaving open the west side but closing the east side.  They are saying that the trail is to washed out and needs to be closed.  If this is the case maybe we can get a club or group to work with the Forest Service and get it fixed.  This is not only used by 4 wheel drives but ATV's also.  If you like give me a call and we can talk more about this issue.  I thought I would contact you first and if you would like I can talk to the forest also about this.
Thanks

Don,

Yes, this is one of many trails set to be closed.

We basically call this the switchback trail up to Signal Peak from Rattlesnake Road.  Joe Chavez has wanted to close this trail for "Resource" issues for some time.  We have heard a now retired soils person evaluated it some years ago and had few problems with it - it is believed the new soils people do not like it.  Every time this trail is mentioned it raises eyebrows in the FS, but then so do most.

My opinion is I like the trail.  The switchbacks at the top are the best part and most stable, at the bottom is the problem with many which ways to go.  Joe Chavez' problem is the very difficult and costly maintenance that would have to be done to sustain it.  He says tractor work would be required often!

The owner of the campground, the one where Sierra Trek is going to be held in 2008, has volunteered to take his tractor up and do some maintenance.  The Adopting club of the "Signal Peak Trail" does not seem to be too interested in adopting the remainder of 13E59.  I forget what the clubs name is, one of FOTF As members is a member of the club, but has gotten little interest from the rest of his club.  Perhaps you know the club and can get some interest.  I am convinced that clubs need to adopt an area of trails and not just one trail.  Do what you can with the FS!!

I was down the trail before the Tahoe's fire restrictions went into force, many quads were developing their own off trail routes and tearing up the area making it even harder to get it accepted into the "System".  Many Quads don't even consider it a 4X4 trail, because it is so narrow in places.

At this time we are over whelmed by our attempts to get the Gold Valley area trails accepted into the System.

There is too much to do!
