Club History:
Members from some other existing clubs formed the 4 x 4 Freelanders in 1979. With a handful of members they set about the task of forming a club with an attitude of family, friends, and four-wheeling. They wanted versatility in their membership, so they left it open to any and all four-wheel drive vehicles. Since this time, they’ve had everything from a Geo Tracker to a Dodge Ram Dually 4x4! The club adopted a one meeting/one run per month format to try to get the most participation at each run as they could. The club has been a member of Cal4Wheel since it’s inception and supports events such as Hi-Desert Round Up, Toys for tots, Panamint Valley Days, and Tread Lightly.

Community Involvement:
The Freelanders have been involved in numerous community projects. We are part of the Arcadia Disaster Action Team through Red Cross. We’ve had the pleasure of taking handicapped children out 4-wheeling to let them experience something new and exciting. The Angeles Forest allowed us to adopt a local campground, The Arroyo Springs Campground, where we put in picnic tables, barbecue pits, and a small walking bridge over the creek that flowed there. The club works annually with Fiesta Floats to tow their floats from Duarte to the parade route for the Rose Parade in Pasadena and return them after the parade. The Freelanders also annually donate toys to the Cal4Wheel Toys for Tots Drive.

Now:
The Freelanders carry an active membership between 15 and 20 vehicles with a handful of associate members. At this time we have stock to well equipped 4 x 4’s. Our club meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month. A newsletter is sent to all members with all upcoming events. We try hard to plan our events 3 to 4 months in advance so members can make arrangements to attend. To keep things versatile each month, a different member hosts a run to a place they are familiar with. Every run that is put in the newsletter is rated so everyone knows whether his or her particular truck is equipped for that event. We always try to mix things up so that none of the members are slighted. Mild to wild is what we are about! Fun for all, but remember 4-wheel responsibly, so that more land won’t be closed to us.
