The Pack
4-Wheel Drive Club
of Los Osos, CA

THE PACK
was started 4 years ago in 1997 to bring together those with common interests.  In 1999 we had 21 family memberships, and  5 Charter memberships which includes dues to CA4WD. Our meeting Protocol follows Parliamentary Procedure, Robert’s Rules of Order.  We have an elected president, elected vice-president, elected treasurer, appointed secretary, and 4 elected board members.  The group meets on the first Thursday monthly, at 6:30 p.m., Lichti Ranch, 12305 Morro Rd., Atascadero all 4x4's welcome Contact Eric Lichti...805-461-3929 . There is lively discussions on past and upcoming events and, usually, a $25 raffle item.  We have had guest speakers from the local sheriff and fire   departments, and local off road supply store. The  board also meets monthly on the second Thursday.

HISTORY
Our founding run was Mountain Topper’s Poker Run at Blue Canyon, 4,000 ft elev., near Shaver Lake in 1997.  We had 4 vehicles and 7 people in attendance.  We weren’t recognized as a club for furthest traveled because we didn’t have an official name.    We decided it was time to get organized. All proceeds at this run are donated to Nancy Hinds Hospice in Fresno.

OUR MOTTO
The Pack name was derived from the wolf pack, like the wolves, we stick together through work and play, no one gets left behind, there is no Lone Wolf, and there is safety in numbers.

OUR GOAL
The pack strives to preserve our recreation through hands on involvement for our generation and future generations.  We teach the “tread lightly” policy to all our members, especially instilling the desire to leave no sign of our presence in the forest.

 ADOPTED TRAILS
We are actively involved in the Adopt-a-trail program with the US Forest Service.  We now have 3 trails adopted in THE PACK name, Green Mountain, Cattle Mountain, and Hite Cove.  Our responsibilities are to remove logs and brush, install and clean water bars, provide protection to stream crossings, meadows, and wet areas, remove any trace of diversion trails or off-trail activity, remove litter and foreign objects, install, replace and maintain trail markers, and promote tread-lightly program.

VOLUNTEER FOREST SERVICE
The Pack is actively involved in US Forest Service volunteer program.  Interested members are issued a Forest Service green shirt and a radio.  We receive extensive training before going out and cleaning up campsites, repairing signs, and educating the public.  A lot of our volunteer time is spent picking up trash.  We have dispersed undesirable sites, (too close to water source or too many fire rings),  and put out forest fires caused by unattended campfires.  Another chore is to issue campfire permits to campers who forgot or didn’t know they were supposed to get one.  Volunteers are required to periodically check in and write a follow up report on any incidents.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Redneck motor sports - This is one of our more popular events, loosely emulating the Tough Truck Challenge.  Some of the contests are an obstacle course, 50-yrd. Dash, slow crawl, turning circle, and articulation ramp.

Dusy Ershim Trail - The Pack has had a run for the past three years, and we’re planning another trip August 2000.  We always have several vehicles, people, and dogs on this trip.  The country is outstanding and the trail is a grueling 33 miles.  Everyone is happy to see pavement at the end of this excursion, but eager to meet the challenge the next year.

Hite Cove -  One of our adopted trails.  We enjoy this not because of it’s difficulty, but because of the diversity of recreation once you reach the Merced River.  There is something for everyone, including fishing, gold-panning, hiking, and wildflowers that are too numerous to mention.

Pack appreciation BBQ - This event is held in November and is typically a 4-wheeling season closer.   Other than meetings, this is usually the last event before we start wheeling again in the spring.

OTHER RUNS ENJOYED

Mountain Toppers Blue Canyon Poker Run - This is our wheelin season kick-off run.  The Pack has been “Furthest Traveled” club for 3 years running, and “Largest Club” in attendance with 18 members for the year 2000.

Sand Drags - The Pack has assisted CA4WD with the Sand Nationals at Pismo Dunes for the past two years.

Other Favorites - Favorite runs to the Sierra National Forest include Red Lake, Coyote Lake, Mirror Lake, and Swamp Lake.  Often a group will take a day-run to the Pismo Dunes or Santa Lucia National Forest.

FAVORITE CHARITIES
The Pack is a Charitable organization and has contributed to various charities.  A few of our favorites are Nancy Hinds Hospice of Fresno, Baywood Elementary School Breakfast Club, Crisis Hotline, Christmas Bicycle Recycle Project (Last year we recycled 50 bikes), and Morro Bay High School Industrial Arts Scholarship.

MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
The Pack puts out an informative newsletter the 2nd week of every month.  This newsletter is complete with reports from latest events, information for upcoming events, and Need/Want ads.

MEMBERS VEHICLES
The Pack on a whole has a NO FEAR attitude towards altering their vehicles.  Be it body modification, suspensions, or drive trains, if it can be altered, it is altered.
