~ There are four main deserts in the United States: Mojave, Great Basin, Chihuahuan, and the Sonoran Deserts.
~The Desert Belt is along the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
~The largest desert in world is the Sahara Desert in North Africa, (almost 3,250,000 miles).
~In most deserts there is less than 10 inches of rain a year.
~In the desert it is usually hot in day and cool at night.
~Cold ocean currents helped form deserts.
~The driest desert in the world is the Atacama Desert in South America (the average rainfall is .4 inches per year).
~The highest sand dune recorded, is in the Sahara Desert at 1410 feet, high
~Animals in the desert have to adapt to their environment, some of these animals are:
~The Jackrabbit that has long ears that gets ride of extra heat.
~The Kangaroo rat that gets water out of the seeds it eats.
~The Roadrunner that gets water from the food it eats.
~The Bobcat that hunts in the nighttime.
~The Side Winder that moves sideways to get a better grip on sandy soil.
~Many animals eat the fruit of the cactus as one of their main food source.
~Many animals are nocturnal.
~Saguaro Cactus facts:
~It grows only in the Sonoran Desert in North America.
~It is the tallest cactus recorded (the tallest one stood in Arizona at 57 feet 11 inches).
~It weighs several tons.
~It can to be almost 200 years old.
~It is a home to many birds.
~Its blossoms open only once a year.
